CAT Match Report

Bhutan won their third match in Group B of the ACC Women’s Championship when they defeated Qatar by 53 runs at Gymkhana Club.

Qatar had high hopes before the match following two spirited performances against Nepal and Singapore, and gave themselves the chance to bat second when they won the toss, but Bhutan showed themselves to be a formidable side.

Bhutan reached 90 for 2 in their 25 overs, Ugyen Dema and Yeshey Choden coming together at 15 for two to share an unbroken third wicket partnership of 75, the latter reaching 40 from 68 balls with two boundaries and her partner making a more sedate 19 from 59 balls.

By contrast Kuwait’s innings was soon in ruins as nought for two became one for four then five for five and seven for seven. Opening bowler Anju Gurung did the damage with four wickets for three runs in her five overs, bowling only one wide, as she joined Hong Kong’s Keenu Gill as the leading wicket-taker in the tournament with 12 victims.

But Kuwait responded bravely, Priyada Murali who has impressed throughout the tournament carrying her bat for 16* and tail-enders Anisha D’Silva who hit the only boundary of the innings and Tahani Abdulrahman who shared a last-wicket partnership of 11 helped her raise the total to a more healthy 37 all out.

Bhutan have a talented girls cricket team who are likely to play off for fifth and sixth places in the competition. Kuwait’s youngsters are still learning the basics but they have shown a great desire to play cricket and are to be highly commended for their efforts in the past week.
