AFGHANISTAN TAKE THE PRIZE

Afghanistan win the final of the ACC Under 19 Elite Cup

Nepal had been unbeaten in the tournament so far but it was Afghanistan who were the winners of the 2011 ACC Under 19 Elite Cup as the beat their closest rivals by 61 runs in an exciting final at Terdthai Cricket Ground.

Afghanistan chose to bat first and expertly paced their innings to reach 200 for 9 in their 50 overs. Afsar Khan and Najibullah Zadran laid a solid base but it was the lower-order that saw their side to a more than useful total.Noor-ul-Haq made 34 from 41 balls and Mohibullah Paak hit an unbeaten 36 from just 23 balls with 4 fours and 2 sixes as Afghanistan accelerated towards the end of their innings. Nepal’s spinners failed to make an impact but Pradeep Airee was impressive in taking 5 for 43 with his medium pace.

THAILAND BEATEN BY MALAYSIA

The ACC U19 Elite Cup reaches its final stages

The final of the ACC Under 19 Cup is held at Terdthai Cricket Ground on Thursday between Afghanistan and Hong Kong, the two strongest teams in the competition. Nepal have already beaten Afghanistan earlier in the tournament but it should be an exciting contest between two teams who will both be looking to take part in the next Under 19 World Cup.

Thailand have been in action at AIT as the the play-offs for the minor places in the competition were held on Wednesday. Thailand chose to bat first in damp conditions against Malaysia in the battle for seventh and eighth places but could only make a total of 83 which was never enough to test Malaysia who won by six wickets.

Vichanath Singh signed off for the Under-19s with figures of 9-5-7-1 as he conceded only one run in his first six overs and Daniel Leach bowled with fire to claim two wickets. Thailand finished in eighth place and have retained their place in the Elite Division.

NEPAL AND AFGHANISTAN REACH FINAL

The Semi-Finals of the ACC U19 Elite Cup are one-sided affairs

Nepal and Afghanistan have looked the strongest teams throughout the ACC Under 19 Elite Cup and so it proved as both semi-finals finished early, Nepal defeating Qatar by 6 wickets at AIT and Afghanistan beating Hong Kong by 7 wickets at TCG.

Nepal had come unstuck in the semi-finals when the tournament was last played, losing to Afghanistan, and they were determined that this wouldn’t happen again as they won the toss and put Qatar in to bat when the match got under way after a delayed start.

Qatar made good progress against the new ball to reach 57 for one but slow left-arm spinner Bhuban Karki made the decisive breakthrough by dismissing top-scorer Saad Khan for 26 and then Tamoor Sajjad, Qatar’s captain and best player, first ball for nought, both caught behind the wicket.

HONG KONG BACK ON SONG

Champions fight back against Malaysia, Thailand gain first win

The excitement is growing in the ACC Under 19 Elite Cup as the group stages came to a close. Hong Kong, winners of the tournament two years ago, had to fight for their place in the semi-finals after making just 119 by Malaysia at Gymkhana Club in Chiang Mai.

Three run outs contributed to a modest total and Malaysia looked to be on their way to victory at 29 for no wicket. Max Tucker turned the match on its head with outstanding figures of 5 for 24 and Malaysia were bowled out for 104. A relieved Hong Kong had won by 15 runs to join Qatar in the semi-finals from Group A.

Bahrain won their second match in two days by beating Singapore by 54 runs at PTIS Oval, Numan Yousaf scoring a mature 89 in a total of 258 for seven. Singapore had to make a daunting 259 in 50 overs to avoid relegation but could only reach 204 despite a valiant 54 from Vikas Rajgopal in a match full of runs.

Winner Takes ALL

Exciting Finish to Group Stage

Hong Kong play Malaysia at Gymkhana Club and Bahrain meet Singapore at PTIS Oval as Group A comes to an exciting conclusion in Chiang Mai. Defending champions Hong Kong must win to be certain of a place in the semi-finals while Malaysia, Bahrain and Singapore all still have a chance of reaching the last four on net-run rate depending on the results of today's matches.

Most importantly, victory today for any of the three will secure their place in the Elite Division as the fifth placed team in the group will be relegated to the Challenge.

Group B in Bangkok is much more simple to explain. The winners of the match between Afghanistan and UAE at AIT will reach the semi-finals in second place behind Nepal, while the winners of the Thailand v Oman match at TCG will remain in the Elite and the losers will be relegated.

NEPAL’S CLEAN SWEEP

Nepal make it four wins out of four as they beat Thailand

Nepal look like they are the team to beat in the ACC Under 19 Elite Cup which is being held in Bangkok and Chiang Mai. Nepal overpowered Thailand by 174 runs at AIT as left-arm spinner Rahul Viswakarma returned the remarkable figures of eight for 15 after the home side had bowled well to restrict Nepal to 245 for 9 in their 50 overs.

Thailand reached 43 for one before losing their last nine wickets in 10 overs as they were bowled out for 71, but they will have a great chance to record their first win of the tournament when they play Oman on Sunday. The Omanis were beaten by United Arab Emirates by six wickets at TCG after being dismissed for a total of just 39.

DRAMA AT GYMKHANA

Qatar surprise Hong Kong, Nepal stun Afghanistan

The ACC Under 19 Elite Cup came alive on the fourth day of the competition. Nepal won the battle of the cricket heavy-weights when they defeated Afghanistan by six wickets at AIT in Bangkok, but it was Qatar who made the headlines by beating defending champions Hong Kong by 11 runs at Gymkhana Club in Chiang Mai.

These four teams are probably the best in the tournament and should all reach the semi-finals but the two teams who had qualified for the last Under 19 World Cup both lost on the same day to show the strength in depth in Asian youth cricket.

Qatar battled their way to a total of 168 thanks to Tamoor Sajjad’s 49 while Max Tucker returned figures of three for 36. Hong Kong had been bowled out for 157 in the previous match so Qatar knew they had a chance of victory.

NIZAKAT THE STAR FOR HONG KONG

Defending champions off to winning start

Hong Kong who won the last ACC Under 19 Elite Cup showed they were one of the favourites this time by overcoming Bahrain by 109 runs at Prem Centre in Chiang Mai. Man of the match was Nizakat Khan, who continued the fine form with the bat he had shown in Hong Kong’s World Cricket League Division 3 success last week.

Nizakat came to the crease in the second over but looked untroubled with a good defence and a range of powerful shots as he hit 17 fours and 2 sixes in his innings of 110. He moved easily to his 50 in 74 balls and raced to his century in a further 38 balls, looking a master at work in his red floppy hat.
