AN AFTERNOON WITH A LEGEND : Thailand’s umpires meet KT Francis

With the ACC Under-19 Challenge Cup successfully completed the day before, some of Thailand’s leading umpires were given the opportunity to meet with and learn from legendary Sri Lankan umpire KT Francis who gave up his time to share his experiences and knowledge and it made for a fascinating Saturday afternoon.

KT, who was Sri Lanka’s first Test umpire in 1982 and later a member of the first ICC umpiring panel, had been in Chiang Mai for two weeks in his official capacity as a member of ACC’s resource staff with the task of looking after and reporting on the umpires standing in the tournament.

These umpires came from countries such as Malaysia, Nepal and China, as well as Surinder Pal from Thailand, and the tournament proved a steep learning curve for the officials as KT watched keenly from the sidelines and held regular meetings so the master could share his vast experience with his pupils. Workshop on the Art of Captaincy by ACC Development Manager

Asian Cricket Council (ACC) Development Manager Bandula Warnapura held a workshop with the eight participating teams of the ACC Under-19 Challenge Cup in Chiang Mai. The workshop was aimed at increasing the teams’ knowledge of cricket’s basic field settings and tactics.

The U-19 age-group is a vital level at which players hone their cricketing skills to help them improve in their future cricketing careers. Team coaches and captains were also briefed on the technical and mental aspects of the game as Mr. Warnapura stressed that “cricket really is more mental than physical.”

“It was good to meet the teams and the discussion was fruitful and a very open one. We want them to learn more and so we are trying to educate them on strategies and field placements in the different cricketing formats”, said Mr. Warnapura.

Thailand are unbeaten so far in the tournament and face China in the semi-final tomorrow at the Chiang Mai Gymkhana ground. The second semi-final will be played between Bahrain and Kuwait at the Prem Oval.

Thailand’s Under-19 coach Ziaul Hoque said, “We were able to gain some very valuable tips from Mr. Warnapura today. He put everything so clearly and made it easy for all of us to understand. With the wealth of knowledge he has, we hope we can put it to use in our upcoming games.” .....

Cricket to Debut at Asean University Games

Thanks to some adroit lobbying by the Cricket Association of Thailand, cricket is to be the 19th discipline at next year’s ASEAN University Games. It will be the first time cricket has been featured in any form in the Games. “It’s yet another significant step in the growth of the game in the region,” says ACC Chief Executive Syed Ashraful Huq.

Cricket’s inclusion in the biennial Games came after a direct proposal to the ASEAN (Association of South East Asian Nations) was made by the Cricket Association of Thailand (CAT) with the support of the ACC. “Cricket is a rapidly growing sport among Thai teenagers,” says CAT Chief Executive and National Coach Mohideen Kader, “we felt the time was right to bring it to the University Sport Board’s attention.”

The 2010 Games are to be played in Chiang Mai, northern Thailand next December. “We offered the organisers the guarantee of two international standard grounds and full administrative support for the event,” says Mr. Kader. Moreover, CAT were instrumental in bringing all the ACC members of ASEAN (Brunei, Malaysia, Myanmar, Singapore) to support their application. The ASEAN University Games follows two weeks after the completion of the Asian Games in Guangzhou where cricket will be making its Asiad debut with the Test-playing countries taking part in a Twenty20 competition in a custom-built stadium.

What particularly appealed to the ASEAN University Games organisers was the fact that Myanmar for the first time in their history will be sending a representative team to these Games and it is hoped that this will open the doors for further participation by the hitherto isolated country in the biennial event. It is expected that six of ASEAN’s twelve member countries will field men’s teams in 2010, with four women’s teams also taking part. It is now hoped that the next SEA Games (the event for the senior national athletes) in 2011 will also feature cricket.

“For some time now we have been saying to our school cricketers that if they play cricket we would help them get into university. Now we can say that getting into university will enable them to play more cricket,” affirms the CAT Chief Executive. “Part of the appeal of the game has always been that it leads to a better life than if you played any other sport, that holds true and I can expect that the cricketers who represent their countries in these Games over the next decade will give plenty back to the sport because of the advantages they received from playing cricket,” says Mr. Kader. It’s the Asian Way.

26th Makhamwan Games

The 26th annual Thailand Youth Games (Makhamwan Games) will take place in Petchabun from the 19th to the 30th of March, 2010. The first annual Thailand Youth Games took place from 26th of April to the 2nd of May, 1985 in the Nakhon Ratchasima province with more than 1,500 athletes taking part in 7 sporting disciplines. Over the years the annual Thailand Youth Games have grown in stature and importance with the 2008 edition of the games involving 9,500 athletes competing over 28 different sporting disciplines.

The 2010 games see the addition of cricket as the 31st sporting discipline. The inclusion of cricket within the annual Thailand Youth Games is considered a big step forward for cricket in Thailand. With cricket being part of the Thailand Youth Games, the sport will now receive nationwide recognition.

This year’s edition of the games will see 6 men and women cricket teams competing. The following provinces will be represented:

Men:                   Bangkok, Petchbun, Chiang Mai, Phuket, Khon Kaen and Chonburi
Women:              Bangkok, Petchbun, Chiang Mai, Khon Kaen, Chonburi and Lopburi

The venue for cricket will be Vithyanukulnaree, Petchbun where a facility is being specially prepared for cricket. The inclusion of cricket within the annual Thailand Youth Games will result in more provinces taking up the sport, as it is compulsory for the host province to field a team for each and every one of the sporting disciplines. The Thailand Youth Games will also help increase the number of playing facilities, as new grounds are established each time the games go to a new province.

Cricket is establishing a very strong foundation for itself in Thailand and the inclusion of cricket as a discipline within the Thailand Youth Games means that the sport is not only being embraced by the expat community but also by the locals as the Youth Games requires all participants to be Thai nationals. With the inclusion of cricket within the games provides CAT with an additional avenue through which to develop cricket in Thailand.

CAT Development Meeting August 2009

CAT held its bi-annual development meeting this last Saturday (22nd August) at the Sports Authority of Thailand complex. The meeting was attended by 20 people with development officers from all the 7 different regions attending.

During the meeting all 7 provinces highlighted their achievements in terms of spreading cricket in their respective regions and suggested improvements as to how cricket uptake can be accelerated even further.

Khao-Yai responded very positively to the development of the Center of Excellence within the region and believe that with the new facility in place, it is only a matter of time before players from the region start representing Thailand. Having recently hosted the ICC centenary cricket carnival cricket has left a lasting impact in the region and has opened immense scope for the further development of the sport.  Read more....

Catching The Spirit of Cricket

Since its inception in June, 1909, ICC and the sport of cricket have changed tremendously. What started off as a three-country alliance between Australia, England and South Africa has now expanded to encompass over a 100 countries. ICC has empowered millions of players, volunteers and supporters to be a part of the sport they love.

This year ICC is celebrating 100 years of cricket and as such undertook an awareness programme to expand the reach of cricket even further with the “Catching the Spirit of Cricket” programme. Cricket is no longer a sport which is played by well off gentleman on pristine lush green grounds, instead cricket is alive and in full force in all-around as can be seen by the fact that no matter where you are in the world in some street corner you will see kids and adults dueling in cricket.

On the 20th of June, 2009 Thailand really did “Catch the Spirit of Cricket” as Khao Yai was buzzing and humming to the tune of cricket. On the 20th Cricket Association of Thailand (CAT) unleashed a flurry of cricketing activity in a bid to leave a lasting impression not only on Khao Yai but on Thailand Cricket in general. So what was all the excitement about?  In  the honor of the 100th anniversary of ICC and in line with the “Catch the Spirit” theme, CAT organized Cricketing exhibition seminar to help those unacquainted with the sport understand its basics. Over 120 kids and heads of over 24 schools attended the event in order to get a feel for cricket in person as the Thai Women’s National team displayed their skills in a short exhibition match and followed by a mini coaching session with the kids. English for Cricket 101

Cricket Association of Thailand has recently untaken the initiative of teaching English to its non English speaking members. CAT realized that in order to develop the cricket further that they would have to make use to local coaches. As such CAT regularly conducts its own courses which are taught in Thai. In order to gets its local coaching body up to international levels the coaches will need to attend courses held by the Asian Cricket Council. These courses are taught in the English medium. As such the aim of the “English for Cricket” programme is to develop the candidates’ English proficiency to a level where they are able to partake within ACC courses.

Currently the “English for Cricket” programme is in its pilot phase. As of now the programme has 12 students from the Thai Women’s National and Under 19 teams. The girls meet up with their instructor Mr Khuram Gilani, at the CAT office twice a week for 2-3 hours sessions. The course in now within its fourth week and Mr Gilani seems to be fairly impressed with what he has witnessed so far. “To begin with the girls were very hesitant, unwilling to converse in English. They seemed to be unsure of themselves. However over the past week they have started to open up more displaying much greater confidence. I see this programme as not only a means by which the girls can improve their cricket, but it also presents an an opportunity for them to develop themselves as people. A command of English will help open countless doors for these girls and that is what CAT is about, empowering people through cricket”.

One Day Series vs. Colombo District Women’s Cricket Association

Thailand win by 1 run

The Thai women’s team performance was good, not allowing the much more experienced and talented CDWCA side reach triple figures. A point to note is that Thailand managed to bowl out their opposition on all five occasions. Batting once again proved to be Thailand’s Achilles heel as they were unable to follow up their exceptional bowling and fielding with an equally exceptional batting performance. Going into the final match CDWCA has already clinched the series and with nothing but pride at stake Thailand posted a total of 79 from their allotted thirty over and managed to skittle CDWCA out for 78. Prior to this series the Women’s side attended two trainings camps held during the period of March and April, one in Chaing Mai and one and Bangkok.

Umpires Refresher Course 2009

If cricket is to prosper in Thailand then it needs to develop the local cricketing human capital. Thailand has been going through a period of heightened development. This means not only the development of players but also essential key figures such as umpires. In this department Cricket Australia and NSW Cricket Umpires and Scorers Association have graciously come forward to help Cricket Association of Thailand in its constant struggle to develop Cricket in this Football crazy nation. CAT will be hosting a two day umpire’s refresher course at the Jasmine Hotel in Bangkok from the 26th to the 27th of February 2009 which will be presented by Mr. John Evans and Mr. Darren Goodger.

Cricket Association of Thailand has been looking at developing the local umpires and scorers base in attempts of establishing a strong local pool base. Having recently held three development tournaments, the Under 15 Challenge Cup, Women’s Under 19 Championship and ACC Trophy Challenge has highlighted the lack of qualified local cricket umpires as rescources were being stretched to accommodate all three tournaments. CAT has wanted to address this problem for sometime now however had been unable to do so due to the lack of qualified human capital. With the help from Cricket Australia and NSW Cricket Umpires and Scorers Association CAT is able to conduct a two day umpire’s refresher course at in Bangkok. This course is meant to reinforce, refresh and clarify some of the more technical aspects of the umpiring discipline for those whom have been actively involved within their respective local communities.

The course will be conducted by John Evans whom has been a member of the NSW Cricket Umpires & Scorers Association (NSWCUSA) since 1996 and has officiated in 182 first grade matches and 240 grade matches overall. He will be accompanied by Darren Goodger who is the Education & Development Manager for NSWCUSA and is currently working full time in cricket as an administrator and trainer of umpires at Cricket NSW.
