THAILAND’S GIRLS HAVE A BRIGHT FUTURE

The second ACC U-19 Women’s Championship was a great success with the girls from 11 teams from across Asia enjoying their visit to Singapore, all making many friends and playing some extremely competitive cricket.

Every team won at least one match to give them all confidence for the future, but Nepal and Bhutan were clearly the most experienced and best teams in the tournament, Nepal retaining their title by winning the final by five wickets.

THAI GIRLS HEAD FOR SINGAPORE

Thailand’s girls will soon be competing in the second ACC U-19 Women’s Championship that is being held in Singapore with the first round of matches being played on 4th October.

Thailand were the hosts for the first-ever ACC U-19 Women’s Championship which was held in Chiang Mai in December 2008 and the exuberant Thai team finished in third place, after playing some exciting and nerveless cricket. The squad for this year’s competition is a completely new side made up of young players from all over Thailand who have all come through the Cricket Association of Thailand’s development programme. It is an exciting opportunity for these young girls to compete with teams from ten other Asian countries and gain great experience from playing seven matches in nine days, as well as being able to visit the wonderful country of Singapore.

Thailand U-19 womens team Squad:

Apinya Phetwattana (Captain) , Chaimaporn Anukun ,Paramee Loetpibulchai , Sitanant Talsook, Phira-on Khamla,Priyaluk Jaisat , Juthamat Thammasri, Parinyarat Saetor , Areeya Priyakhunakorn , Sirintra Saengsakaorat, Sureeporn Laomi, Siriya Sukmanee,  Kanutta Nunthawachirakul

Manager: Shafiqul Haque  Titas Coach: Ziaul Hoque Physio: Barbara McHerro

The teams are divided into two groups: Thailand play in Group B alongside Bhutan, China, Malaysia, Oman and United Arab Emirates; while the five teams that make up Group A are Hong Kong, Kuwait, Nepal, Qatar and Singapore. The top two sides in each group will qualify for the semi-finals.

The standard of cricket should be high as many of the teams have several players who took part in the 2008 competition. Exactly half of the 22 girls who played in the first under-19 final at Prem School when Nepal beat Malaysia are returning for a second tournament.Losing finalists Malaysia will be difficult opponents for Thailand in their first match in Group B, and Bhutan also look strong as their side has largely been unchanged for the last two years after finishing sixth in 2008. Like Thailand, China have selected many new faces, but several of the UAE and Oman players will have benefited greatly from their visit to Chiang Mai.

In Group A, defending champions Nepal will again be among the favourites, as will Hong Kong who will be looking to improve on their fourth-place finish in 2008. Hosts Singapore will be hoping to put on a good display after the success of their under-16 boys team earlier in the year. Many of the girls from Qatar and Kuwait were newcomers to cricket in 2008, so it will be fascinating to see how much their teams have improved over the last two years. Kuwait could be a team to watch out for as Priyala Murali and Siobhan Gomez were two of the best players in the last tournament.

The Asian Cricket Council must be applauded for holding a second Under-19s Women’s Championship so that the girls from across Asia can continue to enjoy playing cricket against each other. Thailand’s young team will benefit greatly from the experience and will have had an outstanding tournament if they can emulate the Thai side from 2008 in reaching the semi-finals.Thailand play their first match on Monday 4th October when they face Malaysia at Ceylon Sports Club, and up to four matches are played each day until the final is held at Singapore’s Indian Association ground on Tuesday 12th October.
