ACC TROPHY CHALLENGE 2010

ACC TROPHY CHALLENGE FINAL

MALDIVES EDGE HOME AGAINST SAUDI ARABIA

Maldives were unexpected winners of the ACC Trophy Challenge when they beat favourites Saudi Arabia by one wicket in the final held at TCG in Bangkok. They showed the benefits both of good preparation and plenty of competitive cricket before the tournament and they were carried towards their triumph by a great team spirit and a will to win for their country.

Saudi Arabia had won all four of their previous matches in the tournament and easily defeated Maldives in their group match in Chiang Mai. But in that game Saudi Arabia’s master batsman Afzal Mohammad had rescued his team with an unbeaten 99  and he had carried them into the final with a century against Thailand.

Saudi Arabia won the toss and chose to bat with openers Shafiq Ahmed and Hammad Saeed starting steadily with a stand of 25 before leaving the way clear for Afzal to take centre stage. He came to the wicket with the score on 35 for 2 and looked untroubled as the ball hit the middle of his blade.

ACC TROPHY CHALLENGE 3RD PLACE PLAY-OFF

THAILAND V QATAR

QATAR FINISH THIRD

Thailand played Qatar today at AIT in the play-off for third and fourth places in the ACC Trophy Challenge. Both sides were looking for improved performances after losing in the semi-finals and it was the visitors Qatar who proved to be by far the better team as they won by 116 runs.

Qatar won the toss and chose to bat even though it had been their bowling attack that had proved their strength when the teams met at TCG earlier in the tournament.

AFZAL’S MASTER CLASS TOO GOOD FOR THAILAND

Thailand and Saudi Arabia played their most important match in the last two years when they met in the semi-final of the ACC Trophy Challenge at AIT in Bangkok. The winner would be rewarded with a place in Saturday’s final and promotion to the Elite Division. Saudi Arabia were looking to regain their place after being relegated last time, while Thailand were hoping to provide evidence on the field of their growing stature in the cricket world.

Thailand hoped that this would be the day that everything came right with bat and ball, but it was a batting master class from Saudi Arabia’s Afzal Mohammad that was the difference between the two sides. His perfectly judged century helped his side to a total of 223 for nine and Thailand’s main batsmen failed to follow his example with the result that Saudi Arabia won by 65 runs.

Qatar, aiming to regain their place in the Elite Division, have looked to be a very strong bowling side, having dismissed Myanmar for 39 and Iran for 31 so it was no surprise that they chose to bowl first on winning the toss.

Thailand’s batsmen with have to play will far more discipline than they have shown in their first two matches and today’s match will tell us much about the real strength of cricket in Thailand as the national team faces an experienced, battle-hardened side.

BREAKING NEWS – THAILAND REACH SEMI-FINALS

Thailand were playing their first full international match at their new home at the Thailand Cricket Ground on the outskirts of Bangkok and they were hoping to celebrate the king's birthday with a comprehensive victory over neighbours Myanmar.

In the end events off the field made the headlines rather than Thailand’s eight-wicket win over Myanmar as it was discovered that Iran had fielded two ineligible players in the previous day’s match at AIT. The match was forfeited by Iran and Thailand awarded the points so today’s victory has been enough to win a place in the semi-finals.
