THAILAND’S WOMEN IN BANGALOREThailand’s Women’s Team will be in Bangalore for two weeks in September, training at the National Cricket Academy. They will be playing four Twenty20 matches against Karnataka representative sides. Former ACC Development Officer and Bangalore native “Roger Binny was instrumental in setting up the program,” says Cricket Association of Thailand Chief Executive Mohideen Kader, a former school-mate of Mr. Binny’s.
With financial support from Thailand’s National Sports Council the women’s team have been training rigorously for the past 18 months. There have been few opportunities on turf however. “The purpose of this tour to Bangalore is to give the players practise on turf. It has been raining consistently in Thailand this summer and the players have had no opportunity to be out in the middle in match-conditions. Playing in India will be challenging and a good experience,” says Mr. Kader. Thailand, as with China’s women who are currently also in India, are preparing for the Guangzhou Asian Games in November this year. The squad will be captained by Sornnarin Tippoch and coached by Tithi Kader. Related link :

English for Cricket 101Cricket Association of Thailand has recently untaken the initiative of teaching English to its non English speaking members. CAT realized that in order to develop the cricket further that they would have to make use to local coaches. As such CAT regularly conducts its own courses which are taught in Thai. In order to gets its local coaching body up to international levels the coaches will need to attend courses held by the Asian Cricket Council. These courses are taught in the English medium. As such the aim of the “English for Cricket” programme is to develop the candidates’ English proficiency to a level where they are able to partake within ACC courses. Currently the “English for Cricket” programme is in its pilot phase. As of now the programme has 12 students from the Thai Women’s National and Under 19 teams. The girls meet up with their instructor Mr Khuram Gilani, at the CAT office twice a week for 2-3 hours sessions. The course in now within its fourth week and Mr Gilani seems to be fairly impressed with what he has witnessed so far. “To begin with the girls were very hesitant, unwilling to converse in English. They seemed to be unsure of themselves. However over the past week they have started to open up more displaying much greater confidence. I see this programme as not only a means by which the girls can improve their cricket, but it also presents an an opportunity for them to develop themselves as people. A command of English will help open countless doors for these girls and that is what CAT is about, empowering people through cricket”. One Day Series vs. Colombo District Women’s Cricket AssociationDuring the months of March & May CAT hosted a bilateral one day series in which the Thai Women’s National teams squared off against Colombo District Women’s Cricket Association in a 5 match series of 30 over cricket. A summary of the series results is provided below. Match No. 1 - 27th April, 2009 at AIT Match No. 2- 28th April, 2009 at AIT Match No. 3 - 30th April, 2009 at AIT Match No. 4- 1st May, 2009 at AIT Match No. 5 - 3rd May, 2009 at BPS The Thai women’s team performance was good, not allowing the much more experienced and talented CDWCA side reach triple figures. A point to note is that Thailand managed to bowl out their opposition on all five occasions. Batting once again proved to be Thailand’s Achilles heel as they were unable to follow up their exceptional bowling and fielding with an equally exceptional batting performance. Going into the final match CDWCA has already clinched the series and with nothing but pride at stake Thailand posted a total of 79 from their allotted thirty over and managed to skittle CDWCA out for 78. Prior to this series the Women’s side attended two trainings camps held during the period of March and April, one in Chaing Mai and one and Bangkok. The openers took 27 from the first two overs, Maqsood Hussain hitting two fours and a six in his 14 from six balls. Adnan Ilyas made a blistering 138 from 118 balls with 19 fours and four sixes, sharing a second wicket partnership of 94 with Vaibhav Wategaonkar who made 24, as Oman’s run-rate remained above seven an over for the first 20 overs.
