THAILAND FINISH ON A HIGH

The Thailand boys cricket team have been participating in the ACC U-16 Elite Cup in Malaysia and have given a string of good performances in the last week. Hence, it is a pleasure to report that they have convincingly beaten Bahrain by eight wickets in Kuala Lumpur to finish in fifth place.

Their final position in the tournament does the boys scant justice as they recorded three wins in four matches, losing only to Oman by the narrow margin of two wickets. They missed out on a place in the semi-finals only on run-rate but they signed off on a high note with their best all-round display of the week.

Thailand needed to make it three wins in three matches to make sure of a place in the last four but Oman just held off a spirited fightback to defeat Thailand by two wickets.

Thailand won the toss and elected to bat first and lost early wickets against some good Oman bowling. Kittikoon Tachenam top scored with 25 and Jainam Sanghavi also reached double figures but Thailand’s innings looked likely to come to an early end as Shreyas Malhotra took 3 for 21. Scorecard

Singapore had looked an outstanding side when they won the last competition held in Nepal in 2010 while the Thais had struggled in foreign conditions so it is a mark of the progress made by cricket in Thailand that the underdogs were able to overcome one of the favourites.Singapore won the toss and elected to field but Thailand’s openers made a steady start with a stand of 22 before the first wicket fell in the 13th over.
